天文学习会沈世武来。
晨六点半起。上午步青来，知建功来〔谈〕关于进修事，渠仍坚持。但余以乔年与琢如前已否决，而建功思以五年算七年，事实上大有困难，故拟介绍至齐鲁大学兼课。天文学习会沈世武来，谓欲观测变星，欲余函Harlow Shapley 介绍书籍。
、203余谓此事不必烦Shapley ，因其为忙人，终日满天飞，而同时尚要主持研究工作，故函张子春可矣。梅太太为交杭立武函，为方重太太小姐进浙大事。余以为如教育部分发到校可元问题，若欲学校通融，则此门一开，以后效尤者不可胜数，从此浙大学生均可经考试未及格之学生人校矣。
步青来谈，知建功已到校。余定星期〔日〕约建功、嘉谷、严德一等晚膳。今日乔年来谈，知其辞教务长己坚决，不可挽留，故决计约王爱予担任，余约振公征求玉爱予同意。中午借周子亚赴青年会参加Rotary Club 扶轮社会议，遇Richard Norton、Mr. Vannevar 诸人。李培恩( Bean) 主席，由王撰生( K. S. )报告上星期苏州RotaIγAssembly 开会情形。一点半即散会。决定下届要余讲演，余决定讲Bores ofChien Tan River “钱塘潮”。三点浙大游泳比赛，余为总裁判。舒厚信以明日赴台湾，故今日未到。自三，点直演至五点半，但参加者并不踊跃，共分八组，每组只三人至五人而巳。
二童难孔子问题之解答。《列子》二童问孔子，日离人中午时远抑清晨时远?etc. 此问近得新解答: Everyone has noticed the strange phenomenon 出at 由e moon appearsto be larger when seen near the horizon than seen when overhead. Actually whenmeasured the diameter is smaller when near the horizon. The standard explanation hasbeen that the moon seems larger when seen in juxtaposition to distant subjects on the horizonthan when seen against the expanse of the sky. Since the effect is the same for anunbroken horizon at sea , this explanation is not satisfactory. Prof. E. G. Boring ofHarvard (Psychologist) show that the effect arises from a peculiar property of the brainand eye. .. When an object is seen directly ahead of the face , with the eyes set squarelyin socket , it appears larger than when seen at angles above or below. Fred L.
