Haochen is Professor of Law and Director of the Law and Technology Center at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law. His research and teaching focus on the theoretical and policy foundation of intellectual property, Chinese intellectual property law, and international and comparative intellectual property law. His most recent research is concerned with copyright law and the public interest, intellectual property protection of luxury goods, and intellectual property and social justice.
Haochen has twice won the HKU Faculty of Law Research Output Prize. He co-edited The Luxury Economy and Intellectual Property (Oxford University Press, 2015) with Professors Barton Beebe and Madhavi Sunder. He is currently completing a book that aims to put forth a new ethical theory of copyright and the public interest. The book will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2018. He is also co-editing The Cambridge Handbook of Copyright Limitations and Exceptions in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2018) with Professors Shyamkrishna Balganesh and Wee Loon Ng-Loy.
Haochen has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Davis, School of Law and the University of North Carolina School of Law. Before joining HKU, he worked as a research fellow at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition.
Haochen has given public lectures at many leading law schools in North America, Europe and Asia. He has also spoken at many international conferences. His recent work on intellectual property has been selected for presentation at the Fourth Harvard-Stanford International Junior Faculty Forum, the Plenary Session of the Eleventh Intellectual Property Scholars Conference, and the Fourth Junior Scholars in Intellectual Property Workshop at Michigan State University College of Law.
Haochen has organized many international conferences on intellectual property. He launched the HKU Lecture in Intellectual Property and the Insights in Intellectual Property Practice public lecture series in 2015 and 2016 respectively. These events have featured public lectures and talks by leading intellectual property scholars, practitioners and governmental officials.
In addition, Haochen has advised leading law firms and companies in the entertainment, information technology, and luxury and fashion sectors on matters relating to intellectual property protection. His opinions about intellectual property have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, South China Morning Post, Ming Pao, Shenzhen Satellite TV and Radio Television Hong Kong.
